Climate change is already here – how do we respond? This unit helps students understand climate adaptation, explore real-world solutions from around the globe, and investigate how communities can build resilience in the face of growing climate risks.
- Understand the difference between climate change mitigation and adaptation, and explain why both are necessary.
- Identify and evaluate different types of climate adaptation actions.
- Recognise the importance of local knowledge, ecosystems, and systemic
approaches in building climate resilience.
This unit can be used in geography, economics, civic education, or language classes (or similar).
Unit project:
In this unit, students investigate a real climate adaptation action in their local area and report on how it addresses specific climate risks. They explore who initiated it, who benefits, and what trade-offs or challenges remain, before writing a news-style article that explains why the adaptation effort matters for building long-term resilience.
Time frame:
We recommend using two classes on this unit.
