About this Lesson

In this unit, learn about anthropocentrism and the benefits of connecting with nature. This unit includes a meditation prompt and a descriptive writing project.

Learning objectives:

  1. Analyse the relationship between humans and our environment, and how this relates to the climate crisis
  2. Be present and observant in nature

This unit could be used in geography, language, art, or similar classes.

Unit project:

We suggest doing a guided meditation (which you will receive instructions for in the unit) with your students outside, preferably in a green space but it can be anywhere. Following the meditation, students are prompted to journal and write about their surroundings, describing the sights, smells, and feelings of where they are. This is a tool in journalism and storytelling whereby you bring your audience to where your story is set.

Time frame:

You can spend just one class on this unit. Begin by reading through the text together or separately, and then going outside for about 30 minutes – 10 or 15 minutes on the meditation and another 15 minutes on journalling and observations.
